Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the state hopes to hit the RM1 billion in the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) sector this year.
“The meetings industry creates thousands of jobs, generating revenue by the millions while supporting the local community.
“Last year, the state hosted 1,250 meetings worth RM808 million. We are confident we can hit the billion ringgit mark very soon this year,” he said in a press conference in Komtar today.
Lim also announced that Penang will be taking part in the world Global Meetings Industry Day (GMID17) on Apr 6, which will be held worldwide on the same day.
GMID events will be held across the globe to demonstrate the measurable impact that meetings have on businesses, economies, and communities.
Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) chief executive officer G Ashwin said it was exciting to have hotel partners to collaborate in the GMID17 to ensure more MICE events take place in Penang.
PCEB is a state government bureau established last year to develop the MICE industry in Penang.
