KOTA KINABALU:
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will apply for a remand extension for a former deputy secretary of the rural and regional development ministry tomorrow in its probe into the alleged misappropriation of RM1.5 billion allocated for rural projects in the state.

MACC sources said the 40-year-old woman would be brought to the Putrajaya court house to extend the six-day remand obtained last week.

It was earlier reported that 350 projects under the rural and regional development ministry are being scrutinised by MACC over allegations of embezzlement involving RM1.5 billion in federal funds.

These projects were planned to be carried out between 2009 and 2015 in Kota Kinabalu, Kudat, Kota Belud, Ranau, Beaufort, Keningau, Lahad Datu, Tawau and Sandakan.

The RM1.5 billion was said to be part of RM7.5 billion allocated for water, electricity and road infrastructure development projects.

Today, Kota Kinabalu magistrate Cindy Balitus allowed a five-day remand for Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) Youth chief Azis Jamman, Tenom Umno Youth head Jamawi Jaafar and Tawau Umno Youth leader Ariffin Kassim in the same case.

Meanwhile, Warisan vice-president Peter Anthony and local businessman Yu Sin Kong had their remands extended for three and four days respectively.
