MCA publicity spokesman Ti Lian Ker said on the contrary, the Chinese detested abuses of power and corruption by officials.
“DAP even goes to the extent of quoting the Chinese proverb: ‘If the water is too clear, no fish can survive’ to justify the assertions that the Chinese are tolerant of corruption.
“DAP is shameless and their statement has humiliated and insulted the Chinese,” Ti said.
He added that Wong’s statement seemed to represent DAP’s stand of tolerating and accepting corruption now that they had tasted power.
Ti alleged Wong’s statement about the Chinese being tolerant of corruption seemed to be made to justify DAP embracing former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“It also could be in the wake of corruption allegations over the Penang undersea tunnel and three main roads project,” he said.
Ti also accused DAP of shaming the Chinese, saying Wong’s statement only served to reinforce the misconception that Chinese businessmen were rich because they endorsed and welcomed corruption as long as they could live prosperously.
“This is a misrepresentation of the traits and ethics that have brought success to Chinese businessmen.”
According to Ti, MCA had been serving the Chinese community for decades and understood the Chinese better.
“Chinese businessmen prosper from their hard work, discipline and business ethics.
“The Chinese votes for DAP in past general elections is not an endorsement for DAP to falsely represent them, nor to humiliate and speak ill of them.”
Ti added that DAP reinforcing the misconception that Chinese traders bribed their way to achieve success would also invite more abuse of power targeting Chinese businessmen.
“This is definitely not what the Chinese voted them for in the last general election.”
