C4 executive director Cynthia Gabriel said after ensuring justice in the 1MDB, Thomas should turn his attention to other scandals such as Felda’s questionable purchase of PT Eagle High Plantations, the kickbacks in the Scorpene submarine purchase, and the RM9.4 billion “Pipeline to Nowhere” revealed by Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng yesterday.
In the long term, she added, Thomas should come up with a public asset declaration law to compel the spouses of ministers and MPs to declare their assets as well.
“While we do not expect every spouse to be as saintly as Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, we certainly cannot afford another Rosmah Mansor, who unashamedly lives in the lap of luxury,” she said, comparing the wife of Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad with that of ousted leader Najib Razak.
“At the very least, we need a review process that can compel the Attorney-General’s Chambers to carry out prosecution in matters of public interest such as 1MDB,” she added.
Cynthia also called on Thomas to consider a law enabling greater public or parliamentary oversight on government-linked companies and government-linked investment funds.
In addition, she urged him to separate into two offices the role of government counsel and that of public prosecutor.
She also called for the repeal of the Official Secrets Act, which she proposed be replaced with a Freedom of Information Act that narrowly specifies what can constitute a secret.
There was also a need for a political financing law so that money politics and the use of government resources for partisan gain during elections could be stopped once and for all, she added.
“We are in no doubt that Tommy Thomas will have the upmost dedication and work ethics as the government’s top counsel and prosecutor.
“We hope that such ardour will be directed not only at finally putting the sprawling 1MDB issue to rest, but also at safeguarding Malaysia from a repeat of such internal predation.”
