Wait for PM’s announcement on Cabinet, say MPs

KUALA LUMPUR: Several Pakatan Harapan (PH) MPs have asked the public to be patient and wait for the official announcement on Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s full Cabinet line-up.

They also denied any knowledge of a list of purported ministers and deputy ministers being circulated on social media.

Amanah’s Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad acknowledged that Mahathir had contacted him and offered him a post in the Cabinet, but declined to reveal the portfolio.

He said the official announcement would have to be endorsed by the PH presidential council and followed by the swearing-in before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“That is all that I have heard but it has to be confirmed,” he told reporters when met today at the Parliament building where parliamentarians had assembled for a briefing prior to the convening of the 14th Parliament next month.

Speculation is rife that PKR will get the largest share of posts in the full Cabinet among the four PH member parties and their Sabah ally Parti Warisan Sabah.

A list shown to FMT shows another four names from PKR being appointed as ministers, with seven from the party as deputy ministers. If true, this would mean that out of 28 expected Cabinet portfolios, seven would be from PKR.

Meanwhile, Warisan’s Penampang MP Darell Leiking claimed he was in the dark about the list of new ministers making the rounds.

Leiking, whose name appears on one list as a minister, said he hoped more MPs from Sabah would be appointed to the Cabinet.

Temerloh MP Mohd Anuar Tahir.

“I think it is better to wait for the official announcement from the prime minister since this is the Cabinet. I am not empowered to pre-empt the prime minister,” he added.

Temerloh MP Mohd Anuar Tahir of Amanah said the Cabinet list being circulated was only speculation and could change.

He said he would not raise his hopes of an appointment only to be disappointed later.

“What’s important is that the people want a Cabinet line-up who will work hard for them,” he added.
