PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak’s supporters have set up a fund to help pay for the legal costs and bail money his family has to pay in their ongoing court cases.

Najib is facing 32 charges of criminal breach of trust, abuse of power and money laundering over the SRC International issue and the RM2.6 billion donation into his personal bank account, while his wife, Rosmah Mansor, is facing 17 charges of tax evasion and money laundering over the 1MDB issue.

In a Facebook post, the couple’s daughter, Nooryana Najwa, shared a letter from the Tabung Solidariti Dato Seri Najib dan Keluarga 2.0 secretariat which detailed how supporters could contribute to the fund.

“We have set up a fund to help ease the financial burden of Najib and his family for the legal costs and bail money, which have run into millions or an estimated RM7 million,” said the secretariat’s head, Mohd Razlan Mohd Rafii.

The fund, Razlan added, will also be used to defend activists who are oppressed or pressured by the authorities for their criticisms of Putrajaya.

He appealed to Najib’s supporters to donate what they could to help his family.

“We hope to show our solidarity in helping our former prime minister, who has done so much for the country.

“It will also help embolden and support activists who have been vocal in their criticisms of the government to ensure checks and balances, which are crucial for a democracy like ours.”
