KUALA LUMPUR:
An MP is among eight people who have been fined for lighting up inside the Parliament building since a ban on smoking came into place recently.

Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad, however, declined to reveal the identity of the MP.

The compounds were issued under the Control of Tobacco Product Regulations 2004.

“We are committed to continuing our effort to make Parliament a smoke- free zone,” he told reporters today.

He said 20 officers were deployed to enforce the ban.

The smoking ban in Parliament took effect yesterday, ahead of a new law next year to ban smoking at restaurants, food outlets and hawker stalls.
