PETALING JAYA: Dwindling business has forced a factory in Kluang, Johor, to retrench 182 workers.
When asked to comment on social media posts on the retrenchment exercise by Guocera Sdn Bhd, Johor exco for Consumerism, Human Resources and Unity S Ramakrishnan said it was carried out in accordance with the law and the workers were compensated fairly.
The factory, which produces tiles, employs 879 workers, comprising 742 locals and 137 foreigners.
Of the 182 retrenched, 161 are locals and 21 are foreign workers.
“There are still quite a number of foreign workers but their contracts end in January,” he said, adding the factory’s poor business was the reason for the retrenchment.
“The labour office has informed me that it will conduct a job fair for those who are affected. There are factories in the area who need workers.”
Meanwhile, Kluang MP Wong Shu Qi said the Social Security Organisation (Socso) is going to disburse funds to assist all affected workers next week.
“My office is also ready to help them.”
