Shafie: Sabah to study tax on petroleum products

The chief minister says that anything that can increase Sabah’s revenue will help the state progress.

Sabah Chief Minister Shafie Apdal
KOTA KINABALU:
The Sabah government will study the need to impose sales tax on petroleum products in the state, said Chief Minister Mohd Shafie Apdal.

He said several aspects needed to be looked into.

“Anything that can increase Sabah’s revenue will be able to bring progress to the state. We’ll see what’s the best,” he said after tabling the Sabah State Budget 2019 at the state legislative assembly here today.

Sarawak recently announced it would impose a 5% sales tax on petroleum products beginning January 2019.

But Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali said Sarawak’s decision to do so will not affect Petronas and the market.

Meanwhile, Shafie said the state government would impose a 5% tax on fishery products it exports in order to control the supply of the products in the local market.

He added that marine products were not only marketed in the state, but also abroad, but it will not generate any revenue if no tax was imposed.
