They have also been banned from entering Malaysia again with a note sent to the embassy by the prosecutors’ office.

GEORGE TOWN: Police say they are dropping a case against a group of Finnish nationals who distributed Bibles and pens at the Chenang beach area last week following instructions from the prosecutor’s office.

Langkawi police chief Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) recommended no further pursuit of the case.

However, the AGC also recommended that the four Finnish nationals who were arrested be banned from entering Malaysia in the future.

Iqbal said the individuals, who were arrested last week, would be deported as soon as possible.

“The group has been handed over to the Immigration Department to be deported,” he said when contacted.

Iqbal also said the AGC would send a letter to the Finnish embassy in Kuala Lumpur to voice its “displeasure” over the actions of its nationals.

On Nov 20, police acted on a complaint filed by a person claiming that the group of four Finnish people had distributed Bibles to the public, voicing concerns over the sensitivities of Muslims in Langkawi.

Police subsequently arrested four people aged between 27 and 60, including two women.

During the arrest, the police seized 47 pens and 336 booklets containing excerpts from the Bible, believed to be for distribution to the public.

They also obtained a remand order for them to be probed under Section 298A of the Penal Code for causing disharmony or ill will.

The four individuals were also investigated under Regulation 39B of the Immigration Regulations 1963 for violating the conditions of their visit pass.
