PETALING JAYA:
A suspected Malaysian fugitive who tried to pass off as a Taiwanese was detained at an airport in the Philippines last month.

The Manilla Bulletin reported that Yap Kean Hwa, 30, was arrested by Immigration officers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

He is currently being detained at the Bureau of Immigration’s warden facility in Bicutan, Taguig, where he is expected to be charged with violating immigration laws.

According to the daily, BI port operations chief Grifton Medina said Yap arrived in the Philippines from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on Jan 14.

Medina said that Yap assumed the name of Tsou Chang Chen in his counterfeit Taiwanese passport.

“Medina said they received information that Yap is a suspected fugitive wanted in Malaysia, explaining his attempt to use a different name and passport,” the daily reported.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Manila later confirmed that the Taiwanese passport used by Yap was reported stolen in 2017 and was issued to a different person.
