De facto law minister Liew Vui Keong, who tabled the motion earlier today, said action could be taken against those who do not declare their assets.
But Takiyuddin Hassan (PAS-Kota Bharu) said the Dewan Rakyat has no law stipulating action against those who do not declare their assets.
“I will not follow the motion. Let action be taken because it is based on an irregularity,” he said.
Other MPs from PAS and Umno including Bung Moktar Radin (BN-Kinabatangan) and Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (Pasir Salak-BN) agreed.
Takiyuddin also asked if action had been taken by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the income tax authorities against those who had declared their assets, saying some MPs from Pakatan Harapan had “extraordinary” assets.
He named Mukhriz Mahathir (PH-Jerlun) who declared a monthly salary of RM105,000 a month as Kedah menteri besar along with assets of RM25 million.
He also named Mustapa Mohamad (PH-Jeli) who declared a salary of RM57,000 a month and assets of RM5 million.
“Has that been probed?” he asked.
Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar (GPS-Santubong) said the motion for asset declaration should have been brought to the attorney-general first.
“Let’s discuss,” he added. “This is not a question of accountability. The way it is raised has to be right. We have to observe the laws.”
Azalina Othman Said (BN-Pengerang) said the matter of asset declaration should not be raised as a motion.
She questioned whether the government was afraid to create a new law or amend the MACC Act.
“If you want to implement it, implement it wholeheartedly,” she added.
Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (BN-Pasir Salak) meanwhile questioned the need to know about an MP’s income.
“It is a legitimate source of income, so why do people need to know? What about the rights of the individual (MP)?”
Noor Azmi Ghazali (PH-Bagan Serai), who was previously with Umno, said there were other items on the PH manifesto that have yet to be fulfilled.
“So why the hurry?” he asked, adding that those who make profits only show their success.
Former Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Ismail Mohamed Said said the Dewan Rakyat would not be able to take action against those who fail to declare their assets as the punishment is not in the Standing Orders. These are the Dewan Rakyat’s permanent written rules under which the house regulates its proceedings.
“There is no basis to take action,” he added.
