PONTIAN:
PPBM president Muhyiddin Yassin today downplayed a recent video in which DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng allegedly criticised civil servants during a ceramah in the Tanjung Piai by-election.

Muhyiddin said he has not seen the video but was informed about it today.

He added that civil servants, be it in the federal government or state governments, are important to Pakatan Harapan in helping to implement their policies.

“I do not think he (Lim) was criticising. Maybe we are a new government and some of them (civil servants) have yet to understand us.

“We are providing them courses to understand the policies that we’ve planned,” he said today.

Muhyiddin was asked to comment on a social media video claiming the finance minister had criticised civil servants at a ceramah on Nov 9. Lim had apparently alleged that some civil servants had refused to work with PH ministers.

To another question on the DAP grassroots members’ grouses and that they refused to help PPBM to campaign for PH candidate Karmanie Sardini, Muhyiddin said that in PH, every component member has the responsibility of helping one another’s candidates.

“There is always dissatisfaction. Let’s be realistic. What is important is that we need to help one another.”

He also said that the PH election team had detected around 12% of voters who they identified as “fence-sitters”.

“We are reaching out to this group of people and trying to persuade them to vote through letters.

“This also applies to voters living outside Tanjung Piai. There are about 8,000 people and we hope they will exercise their rights as voters,” Muhyiddin said.

Muhyiddin, who is also the home minister, said he had also received complaints from the election team over the rule to get a police permit if any candidate wants to go on door-to-door campaigning.

“I hope the police in the district can be more considerate to the candidates, be it PH, BN or others.

“I was involved in many by-elections and general elections. We do not have strict rules back then.”

Election Commission (EC) chairman Azhar Harun yesterday said that Tanjung Piai candidates need to get a police permit if they want to go on door-to-door canvassing of votes.

The decision was criticised by Umno leaders such as Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Mahdzir Khalid. Umno’s Mohamad Hasan also urged the authorities to review this requirement for police permits.
