Recoveries, new cases neck and neck as Covid-19 battle continues

Health ministry reports 110 new cases and 119 recoveries

PUTRAJAYA:
Recoveries kept pace with the number of new virus cases reported today with 119 discharged and 110 more cases bringing the total so far to 5,182.

The 119 recoveries bring the total number of patients discharged to 2,766.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah meanwhile said another death had been reported, bringing the toll to 84.

A total of 2,332 are still receiving treatment with 56 in the intensive care unit and 29 in need of respiratory assistance.

The latest casualty was a 66-year-old man with a history of heart disease and high blood pressure. He had been receiving treatment at Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

Noor Hisham said the statistics show two age groups with the highest number of virus cases, namely 20-24 and 56-59.

“But when the statistics of Covid-19 cases are matched with each age group, it is clear the incidences of Covid-19 for every 100,000 people are highest for those in the age group of 55 to 59 and 60 to 64,” he added.

To date, he said, 62.6% of deaths involve those above the age of 60, while 80.7% of deaths involve those with chronic illnesses including diabetes, high blood pressure, and kidney and heart disease.

Noor Hisham said it was crucial for senior citizens to seek immediate treatment for even the slightest symptoms including fever, cough, flu or sore throat.

“It is the responsibility of family members such as children or caretakers living with senior citizens to ensure they get immediate treatment if they are not well.”

He also said children and caretakers of senior citizens need to ensure they have sufficient supply of medication, and practise good hygiene and social distancing.
