KUCHING:
Sarawak will not implement the reopening of business while the state government considers which business sectors to reopen, state disaster management committee chairman Douglas Uggah Embas said today.

He said the state will take into account its local situation in terms of the number of Covid-19 cases and its logistics capability.

Uggah, who is also Sarawak deputy chief minister, said the reopening of economic activities would be announced in stages, after “every minute detail of the standard operating procedures and guidelines are studied”.

“We will only make a decision after we have studied the changes in the regulations, pursuant to the announcement (by the Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, on Friday that most economic sectors would be able to resume business from Monday.)

“The committee must ensure the reopening of the economic activities and sectors suits Sarawak’s circumstances.”

He said those businesses who had received approval from the ministry of international trade and industry are required to get state government approval through the committee “for their applications to be reviewed before they are allowed to operate”.

He said the committee has found that the standard of compliance for the reopening of more economic activities was not conducive to the state.

Uggah said although the state government respected the announcement made by Muhyiddin yesterday to reopen more economic activities from Monday, the state still needed to study the implications for the state.

He said decisions made under the previous three phases of the movement control order would be maintained until the state government’s study on the implications of reopening economic activities had been completed.

The committee said nine positive Covid-19 cases were reported in Sarawak today, taking the total to 518.

This included a Kuching health worker who tested positive for the virus. So far, 57 health workers have been infected with the virus.

Based on investigations, 22 of them were linked to the Good News Fellowship Church conference cluster while the other 35 were infected through smaller clusters.
