PETALING JAYA:
The government is considering introducing a new act to replace the Drug Dependents (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983.

Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin said the Law Enforcement Committee meeting today had agreed to the recommendation to enact a new act known as the Drug and Substance Abuse Act 2020.

“This new act will increase effectiveness in providing and improving access to drug treatment and rehabilitation,” he said in a press conference at Parliament today.

Hamzah said the committee had also discussed strengthening the various laws and enforcement measures related to the growing of psychoactive substances, including kratom and ketum, under the Poisons Act 1952.

The minister said two technical committees would be formed to look into the matter, comprising officials from various government ministries.

He said the Law Enforcement Committee’s decisions would be forwarded to the Cabinet Committee on Eradicating the Drug Menace which is chaired by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
