KUALA LUMPUR:
Senior Minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob has clarified that passengers in vehicles are allowed to sit in front next to drivers.

This comes after a viral video spread on social media of a man claiming he had been fined by the police because his wife had sat next to him in the car.

However, Ismail said the allegations contained in the video was false as the man had been fined for using his phone while driving.

“Yesterday’s case was an ill-intentioned act on the part of the driver, because when I got the video and contacted Bukit Aman asking why he was fined, they said the video was intended to tarnish the police. He was fined not because his wife was sitting next to him, but because he was using his phone while driving.”

He added that he had asked the police to take action on the false allegation, adding that there were many fake postings on social media.

Meanwhile, Ismail said police arrested 536 people yesterday for flouting various SOPs.

Of this number, 527 individuals were given compounds while eight were remanded and one was given bail.

Among their offences were: flouting physical-distancing rules (153); not wearing face masks (134); failing to prepare equipment or record customers’ personal details (107); interstate or inter-district travel without police permission (40); operating beyond allowed opening times (37); activities at entertainment outlets (8) and others (57).
