The council will comprise the leaders of each party.
The decision to set up the presidential council was agreed to today by party leaders including Prime Minister and PPBM president Muhyiddin Yassin, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang among others.
“The platform will allow discussions on government policy and strengthen cooperation between parties in the government,” PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said in a statement.
He said the decision was made during a meeting attended by party leaders including Zahid, Hadi, MCA president Wee Ka Siong, SUPP president Dr Sim Kui Hian and PBS president Maximus Ongkili.
The other parties, namely PBB, PBRS, SAPP, PRS, PDP, MIC and STAR, were represented by senior party leaders.
The meeting was chaired by Muhyiddin, who is the PN chairman.
Hamzah said a secretariat represented by the secretary-general from each party will be set up to coordinate the presidential council.
During the meeting, PN component parties also discussed forming strong political ties for political stability and the welfare of the people and national prosperity.
In a Facebook post after the meeting, Muhyiddin said they also agreed to revise the charters of the parties.
He added that the presidential council will meet often, with the first meeting to be held early next year to discuss the state of the economy and the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I would like to thank the leaders of all parties for unanimously agreeing to form the presidential council,” Muhyiddin said.
Earlier this month, Hamzah announced that PN parties had agreed to form a presidential council to strengthen cooperation among themselves.
The announcement came after a PN Supreme Council meeting on Dec 1
