PETALING JAYA:
Police are investigating opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim over a statement calling for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to rescind the emergency proclamation.

Perak police chief Mior Faridalathrash Wahid, in confirming the matter, said the case is being handled by Bukit Aman CID’s Special Investigation Unit, The Star reported.

“We assisted in recording the statement of the person who lodged the report but the case has been referred to Bukit Aman for further action,” the portal quoted him as saying.

Mior said that a police report against the Port Dickson MP was lodged in Kuala Lumpur.

Earlier this month, Anwar wrote to all MPs, urging them to write to the King to plead with him to revoke the emergency proclamation and call for a Parliament sitting as soon as possible.

In the letter to the MPs, Anwar said that an emergency proclamation was not needed as there were sufficient measures in place to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, including the movement restrictions.

The King, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, had given his consent to the declaration of a state of emergency to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, which is to last until Aug 1, or an earlier date if the number of infections was to reduce by then.

Anwar has since defended his move saying it did not amount to treason. A few days ago, he claimed that up to 115 MPs were against the proclamation of the emergency and wanted parliamentary sittings to be held.

He has also filed for leave to initiate a judicial review to challenge the government’s decision to seek an emergency proclamation.
