Fans back for football matches from April 1

Ismail Sabri Yaakob says supporters will be allowed into two matches to test the protocols.

PETALING JAYA:
The football fans are coming back to the stadiums. From April 1, supporters will be allowed into stadiums to watch the Malaysia Football League (MFL) matches, with a maximum of 10% of a stadium’s capacity or 2,000 people, whichever is lower, in states under the conditional movement control order (CMCO).

Senior minister for security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said states under the recovery movement control order (RMCO), would be allowed 25% capacity or 8,000 people.

He said the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the stadiums had been forwarded by the youth and sports ministry and agreed to by the health ministry and National Security Council.

He said the return of fans will first be allowed for two football matches, to monitor and look at the SOPs “as a proof of concept and to look at the protocols”.

The two matches likely to be used as testing grounds are the ones between Johor Darul Ta’zim and Melaka United in Johor on April 2 and between Kuala Lumpur and Sabah in Kuala Lumpur on April 3.

Among the protocols that are under scrutiny are the SOPs at the entry and exit points.

“We will do a test first (with two matches) because we are concerned over the entry and exit points.

“While entering, there is a need for physical distancing,” he said, adding that the same has to be followed when exiting the stadium.

Match tickets, he said, would be sold online.

Fans must also maintain a distance of 1.5-2m between each other.

On the matter of interstate travel for Ramadan and Hari Raya, Ismail said the ban on travel would remain until decided otherwise. He said a decision is likely to be made in early May. Hari Raya will fall on May 13-14.

Meanwhile, a YTY factory and workers’ dormitory in Lekir, Setiawan, Perak will go under an enhanced movement control order (EMCO) effective tomorrow until April 1, he announced.

In addition, the EMCO at Henry Gurney School in Telok Mas, Melaka has been extended until April 2. The ECMO was supposed to end on March 19.

On the daily offences, he said police arrested 58 people yesterday over MCO-related offences.

Of that number, 54 were slapped with compound fines while four were remanded.

Ismail said that among the offences were failure to wear a face mask, crossing districts or states without permission, and failing to provide materials for contact tracing or registration.

He added that police arrested 17 illegal immigrants and seized two vehicles and one boat under Op Benteng.
