KOTA KINABALU:
Sabah PAS conceded today that support from the two East Malaysian states is important for Perikatan Nasional to secure a two-thirds majority in the general election.

Sabah PAS secretary Aliakbar Gulasan agreed that unity among all government parties, not only in the peninsula but also in Sabah and Sarawak, is vital for PN to achieve a two-thirds majority.

“This target will, of course, need the utmost support from Sabah and Sarawak,” Aliakbar, PAS’ sole nominated representative in the state assembly, said in a statement today.

“On behalf of Sabah PAS, I (give an assurance) that the cooperation within Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) will be prioritised.”

His comments come in the wake of a statement by STAR president Jeffrey Kitingan that PAS needs to factor in Sabah and Sarawak parties when thinking of securing a two-thirds majority for PN. STAR is a member of both PN and the ruling GRS.

Kitingan noted that PAS strategic director Khairuddin Aman Razali had written in a Facebook post on Tuesday about solidifying relations only among peninsula-based Malay parties to face the next general election.

Aliakbar said Sabah and Sarawak “remain important in any decision whether it involves elections or national development”.
