The previous record high was 5,728 cases on Jan 30.
Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 3,516 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 436,116.
In a statement, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stands at 485,496.
There are 47,340 active cases with 559 patients being treated in intensive care and 303 requiring respiratory assistance.
Meanwhile, the 46 deaths take the number of fatalities to 2,040.
There were 6,072 local infections today, comprising 5,452 Malaysians and 620 foreigners, as well as three imported cases.
Selangor recorded the highest number of cases with 2,251 infections today.
This was followed by Johor with 699 cases, Kuala Lumpur (660), Kedah (445), Kelantan (441), Sarawak (323), Perak (220), Terengganu (203), Negeri Sembilan (189), Penang (183), Sabah (160), Pahang (150), Melaka (122), Labuan (14), Putrajaya (9) and Perlis (6).
The 46 deceased comprised 45 Malaysians and one foreigner, aged between 17 and 91. The 17-year-old had been suffering from leukaemia, while seven of the victims did not have existing medical conditions.
