Have clear guidelines for politicians to cross borders, say insiders

Two Bersatu members say this is necessary so people do not accuse the government of practising double standards.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Two Bersatu members have asked for clear guidelines from the National Security Council (MKN) for politicians who need to cross state borders.

A party member said ministers or their officers have been travelling across states to attend to emergencies even while the public are not allowed to do so.

“Sometimes the ministers, deputy ministers or their officers need to travel out of Putrajaya to their constituencies to attend (to) emergencies such as floods, deaths or other situations.

“Sometimes the minister or deputy minister is not able to attend, and their officers have to go on their behalf,” he told FMT.

Clear guidelines need to be drawn up and made public “so that the rakyat does not think of it as another double standard practice”.

He said the SOPs should include those allowed to travel, under which circumstances, and the officers who are allowed to travel to attend the emergency.

“We need to make these SOPs public to avoid any suspicion,” he added.

Another party member said the government should not leave room for the rakyat to blame the government for practising double standards.

“Now no one is caught yet but if anyone is seen out of their constituency or area, people may blame us again for practising double standards.

“If we have clear guidelines on when a politician or their officers can travel interstate, at least everyone is in the know.

“We need to be more transparent because politicians have no choice but to travel interstate,” he said.

FMT recently reported that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s advisers had warned him of rising public anger because of Covid-19 infections, double standards practised by the government, and fears over job security.

On May 22, a slew of strict SOPs were announced as Covid-19 infections reached over 6,000 cases daily.

Some of the SOPs are for businesses, which are allowed to only operate from 8am to 8pm, while night markets are allowed to operate from 4pm to 8pm.

Social activities, including official government events, are not allowed while individual activities are permitted.
