In a Facebook post, Najib said MPs who defied the party’s position would have to answer to the people come election time.
His post comes after Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced yesterday that the party had withdrawn its support for Muhyiddin as the prime minister, calling for his resignation.
“We have reached July 2021, less than two years from the 15th general election. When that time comes, it is the people who will choose who will head the government and their members of Parliament, and they won’t choose frogs or traitors.
“Citizens can judge who, and which party, is more qualified, more competent, more honest and has a better track record of restoring, rescuing and developing the economy and the country after the pandemic,” said Najib.
He also said that maintaining support for Muhyiddin would give the impression that the MPs were part of the failures attributed to the current government including the inability to control the pandemic and dipping into the National Trust Fund.
Najib added that Umno members were also not likely to forget the actions of those who stand by Muhyiddin.
“(They) will remember the Umno and BN ministers and parliamentarians who were more concerned with their own government posts, who helped the government disregard the orders of the Rulers or defended the leaders of other parties more than their own, but turned a blind eye to the government’s continued failure to help the people during the pandemic.
“The leader of Umno and BN is not determined by how many statutory declarations you manage to gather but through party elections.”
