Record high 9,180 cases, 77 deaths

Over half of the new infections were detected in the Klang Valley.

PETALING JAYA:
The health ministry has reported a record high of 9,180 Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours as well as 77 deaths.

The previous high was 9,020 on May 29.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 5,713 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 731,193.

In a statement, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stands at 817,838.

There are 80,665 active cases with 959 patients being treated in intensive care and 465 requiring respiratory assistance.

It is the fourth straight day the country reported a record high of patients warded in the ICU. Yesterday it was 952.

Meanwhile, the 77 deaths take the number of fatalities to 5,980.

Selangor recorded the highest number of cases with 4,400. It is the second consecutive day it reported over 4,000 cases. Yesterday, it recorded 4,152 cases.

Kuala Lumpur had 1,271 cases while Negeri Sembilan had 899.

This was followed by Kedah (417), Sarawak (406), Sabah (323), Johor (315), Perak (241), Melaka (222), Pahang (214), Kelantan (151), Penang (142), Terengganu (82), Labuan (80), Putrajaya (16) and Perlis (1).

There were 9,173 local infections today, comprising 7,122 Malaysians and 2,051 foreigners, as well as seven imported cases.

The 77 deceased comprised 73 Malaysians and four foreigners, aged 33 to 87. All but 12 had existing medical conditions.

Seven were brought in dead.

Of the 77 deaths, 28 were recorded in Selangor and 17 in Kuala Lumpur followed by Melaka (9), Johor (5), Negeri Sembilan (5), Pahang (4), Sarawak (3), Perak (2), Terengganu (2), Kedah (1) and Labuan (1).

Noor Hisham also said that as of yesterday, the country’s Covid-19 infectivity rate, or R0 (pronounced R-naught), stood at 1.09.

Nine states and two federal territories recorded an R0 above the national average, with Putrajaya topping the list at 1.28.

This was followed by Perak (1.18), Kuala Lumpur (1.16), Selangor (1.14), Pahang (1.10), Kedah (1.08), Sabah (1.07), Penang (1.07), Melaka (1.06), Terengganu (1.04) and Negeri Sembilan (1.02).

States that fell below the national average were Johor (0.96), Kelantan (0.90), Labuan (0.86), Sarawak (0.86) and Perlis (0).
