Record 199 Covid-19 deaths, 11,985 cases

There are 137,587 active cases with 927 patients in intensive care and 459 needing respiratory assistance.

The health ministry has reported a record high 199 Covid-19 deaths and 11,985 cases in the past 24 hours.

The previous highest number of daily deaths was 153 on July 18.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 7,902 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 806,857.

In a statement, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stands at 951,884.

There are 137,587 active cases with 927 patients being treated in intensive care and 459 requiring respiratory assistance.

Meanwhile, the 199 deaths take the number of fatalities to 7,440.

Selangor recorded the highest number of cases with 5,550.

This was followed by Kuala Lumpur (1,174), Kedah (800), Negeri Sembilan (745), Johor (644), Pahang (603), Melaka (453), Sabah (474), Kelantan (386), Penang (362), Perak (274), Sarawak (261), Terengganu (171), Putrajaya (51), Labuan (35) and Perlis (2).

There were 11,978 local infections today, comprising 10,445 Malaysians and 1,533 foreigners, as well as seven imported cases.

Of the new cases, Noor Hisham said 65 of them were category 5, 45 were category 4 and 178 were category 3. Overall, 97.6% of today’s cases were from category 1 and 2.

The 199 who died comprised 173 Malaysians and 26 foreigners. All but 42 had existing medical conditions. A total of 33 were brought in dead.

Selangor also reported the highest number of fatalities with 84, followed by Kuala Lumpur (57), Melaka (16), Kedah (12), Negeri Sembilan (7), Pahang (6), Johor (6), Terengganu (3), Kelantan (2), Penang (2), Perak (2), Sabah (1) and Sarawak (1).

Noor Hisham also said that as of yesterday, the country’s Covid-19 infectivity rate stood at 1.12.

Terengganu recorded the highest R-nought level with 1.31, followed by Sabah (1.25), Kedah (1.23), Penang (1.22), Johor (1.20), Putrajaya (1.19), Selangor (1.15), Negeri Sembilan (1.14), Pahang (1.14), Perak (1.13), Melaka (1.12), Kelantan (1.10), Kuala Lumpur (1.08), Sarawak (0.95) and Labuan (0.75).
