The previous record high of cases was the 15,573 infections reported just yesterday.
Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 9,471 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 834,858.
In a statement, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stands at 996,393.
There are 153,633 active cases with 950 patients being treated in intensive care and 468 requiring respiratory assistance.
Meanwhile, the 184 deaths take the number of fatalities to 7,902.
Selangor recorded the highest number of cases with 7,351. This was followed by Kuala Lumpur (2,406), Kedah (867), Johor (804), Sabah (712), Melaka (631), Negeri Sembilan (625), Penang (505), Kelantan (502), Perak (469), Pahang (406), Terengganu (267), Sarawak (261), Putrajaya (59), Labuan (30) and Perlis (7).
There were 15,877 local infections involving 12,842 Malaysians and 3,034 foreigners, as well as 25 imported cases.
Of the new cases today, Noor Hisham said 260 of them were in Category 5 (requiring assisted breathing through ventilators), 129 in Category 4 (requiring additional oxygen) and 127 in Category 3 (with congested lungs or pneumonia).
Overall, 96.8% of today’s cases were in Categories 1 or 2.
The 184 who died comprised 157 Malaysians and 27 foreigners. All but 36 had existing medical conditions while a total of 32 were brought in dead.
Selangor reported the highest number of deaths (87), followed by Kedah (17), Pahang (16), Negeri Sembilan (15), KL (13), Johor (10), Sabah (8), Melaka (7), Penang (6), Terengganu (3) and Sarawak (2).
Noor Hisham also said that as of yesterday, the country’s Covid-19 infectivity rate stood at 1.09, up from 1.07 the day before.
Terengganu recorded the highest R-nought level with 1.37 while other states with levels above 1.0 were Kedah (1.23), Penang (1.22), Kelantan (1.2), Putrajaya (1.19), Johor (1.19), Sabah (1.17), Pahang (1.17), Selangor (1.15), Melaka (1.12), KL (1.11), Perak (1.07), Negeri Sembilan (1.04) and Sarawak (1.03).
