Umno gives a stern ‘no’ to Muhyiddin’s proposal

PETALING JAYA:
Umno has become the latest party to reject Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s proposal for a more inclusive administration, with its president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi saying the party cannot consider offers from a person who has lost his legitimacy.

Umno’s stand comes after nearly all the opposition parties announced their rejection of Muhyiddin’s proposal for reforms should he win September’s confidence vote.

Muhyiddin had proposed term limits for prime ministers, equal allocations for MPs, anti-party hopping legislation and other goodies if MPs kept him in power.

In a statement, Zahid thanked Muhyiddin for his “admission” that he no longer enjoyed majority support in Parliament.

“We advise the people to remain calm until the Yang di-Pertuan Agong carries out his duties under the Federal Constitution to appoint a new prime minister from among the MPs.”

Zahid described Muhyiddin’s proposal as a “bribe” and a “desperate” move to ensure his political survival.

He also said as an MP who took the oath to uphold the Constitution, Muhyiddin should not undermine the King’s authority and claim that no one else had the majority to form the government.

“Umno would like to thank our 15 MPs who have remained loyal to the party and for continuing to defend the royal institution and the Federal Constitution.”

Earlier Pakatan Harapan, Warisan, Parti Sarawak Bersatu, MUDA and Upko had all announced their rejection of Muhyiddin’s proposal.

However, some MPs, namely DAP’s Ong Kian Ming and Tony Pua have said that Muhyiddin’s proposal should be considered.
