PETALING JAYA:
Anwar Ibrahim has pledged to donate to the poor the allowances he receives as Opposition leader, which was recently raised to minister-level status.

The PKR president said the pledge covers his monthly salary of RM14,907; RM12,320 in entertainment allowance; special emolument of RM1,500; monthly housing allowance of RM4,000; an allowance of RM3,000 once in three years for temperate-climate clothing; and RM1,500 once in three years for formal attire and for “black tie” events among others.

Anwar said while he was grateful that Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had approved the upgrade for an opposition leader he could not agree to “such details”.

“I have also made it clear to those who are preparing an office for the opposition leader in Parliament House that they should not make any renovations and not be granted additional allocations for it,” he said in a Facebook post tonight.

He added that there were also amenities that were reserved for ministers that he did not receive.

Anwar reiterated that the opposition would not blindly support government policies despite the recent change in status of the opposition leader.

“This decision will not affect the role an opposition leader plays, as the prime minister said in his letter to me. I will continue to carry out my responsibilities,” Anwar said.

“The check and balance will be intensified to ensure the country remains on track, democratically.”

Anwar received his “promotion letter” on Monday from prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, in which the government stated it was granting minister-level status and amenities to the office of opposition leader, as agreed in the political pact between the prime minister and Pakatan Harapan.
