KUALA LUMPUR:
The High Court here allowed the temporary release of lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah’s impounded passport today, allowing him to fly to New York to handle his son’s higher education matters.

Judge Muhammad Jamil Hussin allowed the application for his passport to be released from today until Dec 3 after no objection was raised by deputy public prosecutor S Nithia.

Shafee, 69, surrendered his passport to the court as part of bail conditions in his ongoing trial for alleged money laundering involving RM9.5 million received from former prime minister Najib Razak.

He was also charged with two counts of engaging in transactions resulting from illegal activities, namely submitting incorrect tax returns, which is in violation of paragraph 113 (1) (a) of the Income Tax Act 1967 for the financial years ending Dec 31, 2013, and Dec 31, 2014.

The trial is scheduled to continue from Oct 26 to 27.

Recently, the courts had allowed the release of passports of high-profile individuals facing corruption charges in court. They are former prime minister Najib Razak, his wife Rosmah Mansor, and former deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

To date, Shafee who is the lead defence counsel for Najib in the SRC International Sdn Bhd and 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) related cases, has been allowed to travel abroad several times after he was charged.
