PETALING JAYA:
Health minister Khairy Jamaluddin today affirmed that Putrajaya will go ahead with its procurement of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine for children aged five to 12.

This comes after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) endorsed the vaccine for children two days ago.

“82.4% of our adolescents are partially vaccinated, while 62% are fully vaccinated. This will mean #ReopeningSchools safely,” Khairy said in a tweet.

“With the FDA panel recommending Pfizer jabs for five to 12-year-olds, Malaysia will go forward with our procurement of Pfizer for kids. We will also look at other options like Sinovac.”

Recently, a medical panel of US government advisers endorsed the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine for those aged five to 11, paving the way for younger children to get their shots.

The FDA, which convened the meeting, is expected to give its formal green light soon.

As of today, 1,951,450 (62.0%) adolescents in Malaysia have been fully vaccinated while another 640,598 (20.4%) have received one dose of the vaccine.

Meanwhile, in a separate post, Khairy said a decision on Covid-19 booster shots for recipients of the AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccine will be made soon.

“We will be announcing further details soon for AZ recipients to receive their booster and also for other choices for booster shots. For example, people with allergies and cannot take the mRNA may be offered Sinovac or AZ for their booster,” he tweeted.

Khairy also sought to assure the public that heterologous vaccinations (mixed vaccinations) are safe.

“Just to reassure everyone about the heterologous booster, I was a Sinovac recipient. Before I left for my World Health Organization meeting I had a Pfizer booster.”

Recently, the government announced that booster shots will be given to all frontliners, senior citizens and those who are high-risk, such as the immunocompromised.

The government said recipients of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine will receive a booster shot of the same vaccine, six months from the date of their second dose.

Meanwhile, Sinovac recipients will receive a Pfizer booster three months after their second dose.
