PETALING JAYA:
Umno today said it wants to work with PAS in the upcoming Melaka state polls.

Maintaining the stand taken by the party in the 2020 Umno general assembly, which was held in March this year, Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said it also wishes to avoid head-to-head battles with the Islamist party.

“However, this is based on the premise that both parties use their own logo in the Melaka state elections, as per the understanding reached by the Muafakat Nasional Consultative Committee on Oct 19 and Nov 18 last year,” he said in a statement following the Umno Supreme Council meeting tonight.

Previously, Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin announced that the coalition will contest all 28 state seats and had decided to field candidates from Bersatu, PAS and Gerakan under the PN logo.

Meanwhile, the Umno supreme council also agreed on its deputy president Mohamad Hasan being made the party’s election director for the Melaka polls.

It was also decided that Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Mohamad and Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob will finalise any decision related to the Melaka state elections.

Melaka goes to the polls on Nov 20, with nomination day set for Nov 8.
