PETALING JAYA:
The number of flood evacuees in Kedah rose to 665 people this evening, but in Melaka, the number of evacuees was declining.

The Kedah civil defence force said another relief centre was opened at Dewan Cenderawasih in the Pendang district to house 61 people from 19 families.

The other relief centre in Pendang is currently housing 217 people from 48 families, while in Kubang Pasu district, 119 people from 35 families are being housed at SK Dewan Kampung Tradisi, Lembah Keriang.

In Kota Setar district, 228 people from 68 families are being housed at SK Langgar, SK Suka Menanti and SK Darul Hikmah, while in Baling, 15 people from five families are seeking shelter in two centres.

Another 25 people from eight families are being housed in a centre in Pokok Sena district.

In Perlis, two relief centres were opened in Arau to house flood evacuees since early this morning.

The Perlis civil defence force said 77 people from 19 families were housed at the Kampung Banggol Sena mosque and 26 people from eight families were seeking shelter at SK Arau this evening.

The Melaka civil defence force, meanwhile, said the number of evacuees in Alor Gajah dropped to 149 people from 38 families this evening.

A total of 76 people from 18 families are being housed at SJKC Sin Wah, 47 people from 10 families at Dewan Japerun Durian Tunggal and 26 people from 10 families are at SK Durian Tunggal.

Heavy rain yesterday affected six areas – Kampung Padang Keladi, Bukit Balai, Kampung Bukit Tambun, Pekan Durian Tunggal, Taman Murai Jaya and Kampung Padang Kerbau.

Melaka caretaker chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali said the state government would consider raising the amount of assistance given to flood victims.

He said extreme weather conditions had made the situation unpredictable and the move to increase the aid amount would help ease the burden faced by flood victims.

He said flood victims normally receive RM200 in financial aid, which needed to be increased as the prices of goods had also gone up.

Sulaiman also said that he wanted the relevant parties to also involve residents’ representatives in meetings with implementing agencies to find immediate solutions to the flood problem as the residents would know more about the cause of frequent flooding in their housing area.

In a related development, Sulaiman announced a 15% rebate for the October 2021 water bill for 24,141 domestic consumer accounts in Melaka Tengah, Alor Gajah and Jasin affected by the floods.

Meanwhile, the Royal Malaysian Air Force said it was ready to deploy its assets to carry out operations to rescue flood victims during the northeast monsoon period.

Air force chief Gen Ackbal Abdul Samad said three types of aircraft, among them the EC725 helicopter, would usually be deployed to send aid to flood victims.

“Thus far, we are on standby only. When it’s time we will deploy or move the assets,” he told a media conference after the closing ceremony of a military exercise at the Kuantan air base today.
