PETALING JAYA:
Nagaenthran K Dharmalingam, a 33-year-old Malaysian awaiting the death penalty on a drug conviction in Singapore, has been accorded “full due process under the law”.

This has been conveyed by the country’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and foreign minister Vivian Balakrishnan to their Malaysian counterparts.

According to a Bernama report, this was based on a statement issued by the Singapore foreign ministry in response to media inquiries on a letter sent by Malaysian leaders regarding Perak native Nagaenthran, who had been scheduled to be hanged on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had on Nov 3 written to Lee appealing for leniency for Nagaenthran on “humanitarian grounds”, adding that he hoped Nagaenthran would be able to file a new petition for Presidential clemency, which was rejected on June 1, 2020.

Nagaenthran was arrested in April 2009 for trafficking about 42.72gm of pure heroin and his lawyer had launched an 11th-hour appeal against the execution arguing he was not mentally fit.

Bernama previously reported that Nagaenthran had appeared at Singapore’s Court of Appeal on Tuesday for a last-bid attempt against his death sentence when the court was informed that he had tested positive for Covid-19.

The Court of Appeal then granted a stay of judicial execution with immediate effect.
