Put off Kampung Baru inquiry so compensation talks can go on, says minister

Corporation says the proposal follows talks among the lands and mines department, developers and owners of the PKNS Sungai Baru flats.

Owners of the PKNS Sungai Baru flats in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur, want fair compensation from the developers.
PETALING JAYA:
Federal territories minister Shahidan Kassim has proposed that the inquiry into the Kampung Baru land acquisition be postponed to next year to enable negotiations on compensation between the developers and owners of the PKNS Sungai Baru flats to proceed.

The Kampong Bharu Development Corporation (PKB) said the decision was reached after consultations with the Kuala Lumpur department of lands and mines, the developers and the residents of the flats recently.

“The federal territories ministry, through PKB, is acting to facilitate the implementation of this redevelopment in line with its functions as stated in the Kampong Bharu Development Corporation Act (Act 733),” it said in a statement.

“The federal territories minister will always strive to ensure that negotiations between the developers and the owners of the lots and flats run smoothly.”

Last Saturday, nearly 20 residents of Kampung Sungai Baru gathered to request government intervention into compensation they were allegedly offered by the developers, which they claimed was between RM200,000 and RM250,000.

Shahidan denied this, saying the actual compensation to be paid to residents involved in the redevelopment project would be higher, but had yet to be finalised.
