Apologise and clean up your own backyard, doctors tell MACC

The Malaysian Medical Association says the ‘corrupt doctors’ video released by the anti-graft agency was offensive and in poor taste.

In the clip posted on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s Twitter account, a patient is seen bribing a doctor for a medical certificate.
PETALING JAYA:
The anti-corruption awareness video by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is offensive and crass, says the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA).

The MMA said the video, which depicted how a doctor could be bribed to issue a medical certificate (MC), should be removed right away.

“The video is an insult to the sanctity and image of our medical profession.

“The government agency should have used other examples to convey its message. As doctors, we feel deeply offended by the post which should be taken down immediately,” the MMA said in a statement today.

In the clip posted yesterday on the MACC’s official Twitter account, a man is shown asking for an MC although the doctor says he is not unwell.

The man then proceeds to slide an envelope over to the doctor “to facilitate” his request. The doctor accepts the envelope and is then seen signing his MC.

The video ends with a catchphrase, “Restore integrity, fight corruption”.

The MMA slammed MACC for having forgotten the sacrifices of doctors in the battle against the Covid-19 pandemic, which had so far claimed 31,591 lives in the country.

“Recently, many of our doctors were up to their waist in floodwater, sending aid to flood victims even while their clinics were destroyed by the floods,” MMA said, adding that these were just a few examples of doctors’ undying passion and commitment to provide care to the public.

“We demand that MACC issue a public apology for the video which we feel was done in poor taste, and while they are at it, clean up its own backyard.”

“From the long thread of comments by netizens in response to the video, it appears that MACC has issues regarding its own reputation to address,” it added.
