KUALA LUMPUR:
The floods in several states have claimed 54 lives, with two people still missing.

Bukit Aman internal security and public order director Hazani Ghazali said Selangor recorded the highest number of deaths with 25 cases, followed by Pahang (21), Kelantan (4), Sabah (3), and Negeri Sembilan (1).

“Two people are still missing in Pahang,” he said at a press conference in Bukit Aman.

Meanwhile, Hazani said, there are 172 temporary evacuation centres still in operation in seven states with a total of 13,322 victims involving 3,989 families.

He said the overall number of flood victims had decreased, noting that only Johor recorded an increase in the number of flood victims.

“Also, a total of 52 roads are still closed due to stagnant floodwaters,” he added.

Hazani said the police have also made a special request to the government for five boats to be stationed at 157 district police headquarters.

“This would be part of our efforts to help rescue more flood victims in future.”

Hazani said areas in Pahang, Terengganu, and Kelantan, including parts of Johor and Sabah would be the main focus for his team during the flood season.
