Ng, the former Goldman Sachs head of investment banking in Malaysia, was convicted by a jury in New York of conspiring to violate an anti-corruption law to help loot hundreds of millions of dollars from 1MDB.
Muhyiddin said Ng’s case had uncovered evidence of embezzlement involving key Malaysian government officials and leaders at the time.
“I have opposed their criminal acts from the beginning and will continue to fight to prevent this kleptocratic group from returning to power,” said Muhyiddin in a statement.
“I believe the courts in our country will also give all Malaysians justice in the 1MDB cases which are still in proceedings. The trials must be expedited so that justice can be served immediately.”
Muhyiddin was sacked as deputy prime minister from Najib Razak’s Cabinet in 2015 after he called for a transparent investigation into 1MDB.
Najib is on trial in two 1MDB-related cases related to a deposit of RM2.28 billion into his bank accounts, and over amendments to an 1MDB audit report before it was tabled at the Public Accounts Committee meeting.
