PETALING JAYA:
Graphic artist and activist Fahmi Reza, held overnight in a sedition investigation, has given police a tongue-in-cheek “four-star” rating for the treatment he received at Dang Wangi district police headquarters.

Fahmi was arrested on Thursday after being summoned over a satirical cartoon he posted on social media showing an ape in headgear and yellow attire similar to that worn by royalty.

He was released yesterday after spending the night in the lock-up under a one-day remand granted by the magistrate.

On his release, he posted a photograph of himself showing the V sign outside the Dang Wangi police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, and gave a tongue-in-cheek review of his overnight stay.

“I have ‘checked out’ from the Dang Wangi hotel! 2 days 1-night accommodation package ‘courtesy of Mojo Jojo’!” he said.

“Splendid location, perfect environment and great welfare. The food was delicious and readily delivered to the room for sahur and iftar.

“I would return again. I give it four stars.”

Police had confiscated a mobile phone and SIM card for the investigation.

His arrest came after he had defended the use of satire in art, saying “Satire Is Not a Crime”, in an apparent reference to comments about a painting depicting MPs as monkeys and frogs in the Dewan Rakyat which was bought by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

Fahmi later posted a picture showing a caricature of an ape in regalia within an ornate frame.
