KUALA LUMPUR:
The frequency of train services on the Kelana Jaya LRT line is expected to improve by August once more coaches have been repaired, said transport minister Wee Ka Siong.

In a press conference, Wee said the interval between trains was up to eight minutes now, but this would be reduced to five minutes in August.

He added that the ministry aimed to reduce the intervals to three minutes by November.

He was responding to recent complaints from passengers of long waits for trains and congestion at LRT stations.

Wee said the recent disruptions to the LRT service were partly due to several train sets being under maintenance.

“We took this measure for the safety of passengers and to prevent any undesirable incidents.”

Over the past few days, many LRT users took to social media to voice disappointment over congestion at stations, with some complaining that they were late to work because of this.

Pictures of a congested Pasar Seni LRT station also made the rounds on social media, showing passengers being forced to queue up from the escalators leading to the station.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that all public transportation services under RapidKL and KTM services in the Klang Valley would be free for a month, starting today.

He said Putrajaya would spend a total of RM155 million to subsidise the cost of the free public transportation services, which he hoped would encourage the use of these services while reducing traffic congestion.
