Only the best teachers should lead in online lessons, says Dr M

The former PM says online lessons will not benefit students if the teacher is not good at teaching.

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad says it is imperative to instil good character during lessons.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has suggested that the best and most experienced teachers should lead in terms of preparing online or broadcast teaching and learning materials.

He said with the latest technology, lessons that were broadcast electronically would enable every classroom to obtain the same benefits from the best teachers, with the class teacher assisting the students.

“Some students may benefit if the teacher happens to be good (at teaching), but some may not benefit as much if the teacher is lacking,” he said in a TV interview on online learning.

Mahathir said the most important thing about teaching was to equip students with knowledge. Beyond that, it was also imperative to instil good character.

“If good character is not implanted in students, they may abuse or misuse the knowledge they get,” he said.
