PETALING JAYA:
The Registrar of Societies (RoS) has approved Umno’s application to amend its constitution and postpone its party elections, says Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan.

In a statement, Ahmad said he received an RoS letter confirming the matter this evening.

Now that the amendment is approved, Umno will be allowed to postpone its party elections for up to six months after a general election, or up to 18 months from the end of its leadership’s term, whichever comes later.

Ahmad said Umno will hold its party elections no later than six months after the next general election.

“On behalf of Umno, I want to thank the RoS and other parties who were involved in approving the amendment to Umno’s constitution,” he said.

Earlier today, it was reported that Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan said the party had written letters of appeal to RoS for the decision to be announced before July 31 so that the party could prepare for internal elections if the application for postponement was rejected.

Umno had postponed its elections for 18 months after the last term ended on June 30 last year. This means the elections would have to be held before Dec 30 if the amendments were not approved.
