PSM confirms asking PH for Sungai Siput seat

The party says it has made a 'reasonable' request for the seat to be contested by its chairman, and other seats not held by Pakatan Harapan.

PSM chairman Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj, formerly of PKR, was a two-term MP for Sungai Siput from 2008 to 2018.
PETALING JAYA:
Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) has confirmed requesting to contest the Sungai Siput parliamentary seat in its negotiations for an electoral pact with Pakatan Harapan (PH).

PSM chairman Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj, was the two-time Sungai Siput MP from 2008 to 2018. However, he lost to PKR’s S Kesavan in the 14th general election after talks broke down between PH and PSM.

In a statement, PSM deputy chairman S Arulchelvan said the party had only requested Sungai Siput for Jeyakumar, and other seats that were not held by PH.

He said this was a “very reasonable” and minimal request, on top of PSM’s request to use the PH logo.

“The media has asked us which seats we will be contesting. This will be determined by whether or not the electoral pact with PH works out.

“Since our last meeting with the PH committee on Sept 30, we have yet to hear of any outcome officially from the committee, who did say they will report to PH’s presidential council,” Arulchelvan said.

He said the party will proceed to hold workshops for its shortlisted candidates and campaign managers in preparation for the elections.

Previously, PSM had said it was seeking an electoral pact with PH to allow “four or five” of its candidates to contest state and parliamentary seats under the PH banner.

However, PSM has no plans to formally join PH as a component party.

MIC president SA Vigneswaran is also eyeing Sungai Siput, a seat that was held for eight terms by the late S Samy Vellu.
