Enough room for Muda in PH, says Hannah

Former Segambut MP says supporters want to see a united opposition.

Hannah Yeoh says it is good that PH and Muda are on the verge of sealing an electoral pact for the next GE.
PETALING JAYA:
A DAP leader has backed Muda’s bid to join Pakatan Harapan (PH), saying there is enough room for it and other like-minded parties in the coalition.

Hannah Yeoh, DAP’s assistant publicity secretary, said it was good that PH and Muda were on the verge of sealing an electoral pact for the next general election. Supporters wanted to see a united opposition, she told FMT.

“In politics, you will always have new players and I think that’s a good thing for Malaysian politics,” she said.

“If we share the same values, there is no need for us to run each other down just because Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman uses a different logo from mine.”

PH components have been in disagreement on whether Muda should be welcomed into the coalition with some arguing that the party led by former Muar MP Syed Saddiq would be a liability and that it would complicate seat allocations.

Recently, Federal Territories Amanah Youth chief Asmaaliff Abdul Adam said his party would contest in Muar if Muda placed a candidate in Titiwangsa, where Amanah communications director Khalid Samad is slated to stand.

Yeoh said it was common for parties in the same coalition to fight for seat allocations, adding that this is why it was important for all parties to negotiate and come to an agreement before “going into battle”.

“It’s not just about Amanah and Muda,” she said. “Let’s talk about the seat quota for women. Even that is contentious and heated.”

Yeoh urged youths to turn up to vote, saying there were many laws being discussed in Parliament such as the Generational End Game bill which would affect them.

“There is also an anti-stalking law and sexual harassment bill. All of these concern young people.”

She said it was important for youths to have their voices heard in Parliament and to have a say as to the kind of lawmakers they wanted.

“Sitting out and not voting will give a free ticket to Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional because they have their core supporters who will think that people in those coalitions can do no wrong,” she said in a comment on social media messages calling for a boycott of GE15.
