KUALA LUMPUR:
Perikatan Nasional MPs will be embarking on a special mission to Turkey to help with earthquake relief efforts.

Ahmad Tarmizi Sulaiman (PN-Sik) told Dewan Rakyat that the five-day mission will be led by Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

He also urged Wisma Putra to help coordinate the movement of Malaysian relief teams that will soon be going to Turkey.

“This includes PN MPs who will go on a special mission from March 2 to 7,” he said when commenting on Anwar Ibrahim’s (PH-Tambun) briefing on his trip to Turkey on Feb 14.

Earlier, Anwar, the prime minister, explained why Malaysia went to great lengths to help Turkey following last week’s earthquake.

He said the scale of destruction was massive and that to date, 35,418 people had been killed.

“Secondly, it is (to maintain) the friendship between the countries, not just on a personal level (between Anwar and Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan) but between the two nations.”

He said another reason was that Turkey had also helped Malaysian companies and Malaysians in that country, including providing them with financial aid.

Anwar also commended the two Malaysian rescue teams in Turkey and proposed that they be given a special allowance and medals.

Meanwhile, he said he would propose to the Cabinet that Malaysia allocate additional funds for relief efforts in Turkey on top of the USD1 million (RM4.4 million) previously approved by the government.
