
PETALING JAYA: Titiwangsa MP Johari Ghani will be contesting for the post of Umno vice-president in the party’s upcoming elections.
According to Utusan Malaysia, the former second finance minister submitted his candidacy papers at the Umno headquarters in Kuala Lumpur this morning.
Besides Johari, Umno Supreme Council member Reezal Merican Naina Merican also announced his candidacy for the vice-president’s post today.
They will be contesting against incumbents Khaled Nordin and Mahdzir Khalid.
There are three vice-president’s posts up for grabs. The other incumbent, Ismail Sabri Yaakob, has yet to announce if he will be defending his position.
There is speculation that Pengerang MP Azalina Othman Said, Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, former Johor Umno chief Hasni Mohammad and Supreme Council member Shamsul Anuar Nasarah are also eyeing the vice-presidency.
Nominations for the Umno elections started on Feb 13 and will continue until Sunday.
The elections for Wanita, Youth and Puteri posts will be held on March 11. Division officials and members of the Supreme Council will be elected on March 18.
