BATU PAHAT:
Johor has called for manpower assistance from the federal government and states not affected by floods as the existing number of workers cannot cope with the “extraordinary” flood situation in the southern state.

Its menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi said, as of 1pm, all 10 districts have been hit by floods and that the number of evacuees had risen to over 33,000.

He said every agency had been helping out since the floods struck on Monday but some workers were getting worn out, adding that some had not slept for three days.

“They have been working so hard and I pity them.

“I want to call for additional assistance in terms of machinery or personnel from other states not hit by floods — from the social welfare department and so forth,” he said after visiting a relief centre at SJK (C) Yong Peng 1.

On claims that aid distribution was slow, Onn Hafiz called on flood victims to be patient as all agencies have been mobilised from the very first day, while workers were overwhelmed by the increasing number of victims.

Onn Hafiz said aid had arrived at the relief centres and that if supplies were still insufficient, the matter would be resolved immediately. He also thanked NGOs and private companies that have come forward to help.

“We will be distributing aid every day, apart from the contribution of food and clothes from donors.”

He urged the people of Johor to remain strong and calm in the face of adversity.

No need to declare emergency, says Fahmi

Meanwhile, communications and digital minister Fahmi Fadzil said the Cabinet has decided that there is no need to declare an emergency in Johor following the floods which hit the state.

Fahmi, who is also the unity government’s spokesman, said the main things discussed in the Cabinet meeting earlier included the immediate action which the federal government needed to take to assist Johor.

The Cabinet wanted to examine what government assets could be mobilised immediately to help residents, he said at a press conference.

Fahmi also said the federal government had channelled RM50 million in flood relief to Johor.

The number of flood victims in Johor as of 8am was reported to be 33,149. They have been evacuated to 217 temporary relief centres.
