No need for Sivakumar to go on garden leave, says PM

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim points out that no charges have been brought against human resources minister V Sivakumar.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says the investigation process is up to the MACC, but whether charges are pressed is a separate matter.
PETALING JAYA:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says there is no need for human resources minister V Sivakumar to go on garden leave over an ongoing graft probe that has seen the latter summoned by the authorities.

Anwar said Sivakumar had only been summoned to give his statement to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), adding that it would be inappropriate to speculate on the case.

“It’s still being investigated and no charges have been brought against him yet.

“The investigation process is up to the MACC. What comes after that, whether charges are pressed or not, is another matter altogether,” Anwar told reporters at an event in Kuala Lumpur.

He also stressed that Putrajaya was not compromising with corrupt practices and that any alleged wrongdoing was being probed, regardless of political affiliations.

Yesterday, MACC summoned Sivakumar to give his statement following the arrests of a few of his officers in connection with a case involving the recruitment of foreign workers.

While there were reports that the minister’s home and office were also raided by MACC, Sivakumar denied this.

The DAP man had said he was ready to cooperate with the authorities over the matter and urged the public not to make any speculations about the arrests. He said the arrests were part of the investigation process once a complaint was lodged with MACC.

The anti-graft agency recently arrested two of Sivakumar’s senior officers in connection with matters involving the recruitment of foreign workers.

Sivakumar’s private secretary was arrested on Friday in an investigation into the approval of migrant worker quotas.
