PETALING JAYA: MCA has described a Registrar of Societies’ query on its elections as “confusing”, saying they are conducted in accordance with its constitution and the law.
The party’s elections are being held over a five-month period, beginning at the branch level today.
MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon said RoS had queried the party in a letter on a clause where the party’s elections must start no later than six months after a general election, or 36 months after the last party elections, whichever is later.
However, he pointed out that Article 167 of the party’s constitution did not put any limits on how long the elections will run.
“The fact is, the clause that was approved during MCA’s 2019 annual general meeting had been forwarded according to procedure to RoS and received its approval in February 2021.
“Therefore, this query by RoS is quite confusing,” he said in a statement.
Chong said the party elections were being conducted over five months, starting at the branch level today, and will last until Sept 24, after the contest at the central level is completed.
