According to Utusan Malaysia, Lau, the Gerakan president, said his allies do not have to attend all his campaign activities.
During a walkabout, he said PAS’ election machinery did not have to accompany him today as he was meeting voters from the Indian and Chinese community.
“PAS is helping (me). Yesterday, some of their members were there for my nomination.
“Today, we see that even Bersatu is not here because I am meeting Indian and Chinese voters.
“All of us have roles to play. Some are tasked with putting up flags, posters and so on,” he was quoted as saying.
Lau, a senator, said he had met several PAS divisions and grassroots leaders to discuss their campaign to ensure a PN win in Bayan Lepas.
A group of PAS grassroots members recently protested against Lau’s candidacy in Bayan Lepas, saying a PAS member should be fielded to contest in the Malay-majority seat.
The Bayan Lepas electorate in 2018 comprised Malays (64.4%), Chinese (29.8%), Indians (5.2%) and others (0.4%).
In 2018, Pakatan Harapan won the seat with a 5,245-vote majority. Election Commission data showed PH received 40% of the votes, followed by PAS (38%), BN (20%) and others (1%).
